ACCOUNTING (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Open Entry
Course Content:
Accounting looks at the basic accounting process, following a transaction through from the time it takes place to see how it is recorded in the accounts of a business of a sole trader, and how it finally appears in the financial reports of that business.
It will serve as a foundation course for entry into Level 2 Accounting

Accounting

ART (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Y10 Art
Course Content:
This course is more intensive than Year 10 art. Most of the course will involve the completion of artworks using a variety of media, with a more in-depth approach. The course will also involve some research and writing about artists, which includes a study of Polynesian art as part of the research work.
This course is demanding and time consuming and students must have the capacity for steady work throughout the year and a genuine interest in art. Students must be prepared to spend considerable time doing regular homework to achieve the required quantity and quality of work. There will be completion times throughout the year for assessment of credits towards NCEA.

Art

COMPUTING (NATIONAL CERTIFICATE/NCEA LEVEL 2)
Pre-Requisite: Open Entry
Level of Study: Level 2 Unit Standards and NCEA Level 2
Course Content:
This is the first year of a two-year course. Students will complete three compulsory standards followed by a selection of standards which could include spreadsheets, databases, desktop publishing, computer technology, file management, web page design and operating systems.
Assessment: National Certificate in Computing Level 2; Unit Standards - Internal (26 credits)

Computing

DANCE (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Level 5 in Y10 Dance, or at Miss Devaroe's discretion.
Course Content:
This course prepares the students to sit three internal achievement standards and two external which are sat at the end of the year. The students will be exploring solo and group chorographic technique as well as studying three genres of dance (hip hop, contemporary and jazz) for both internal and external assessment. There are also workshops that the students attend during class time run by outside contemporary choreographers. It is a physically demanding subject that does require the student to have a medium to high level of fitness and dedication to the subject.
Assessment: Achievement Standards - Internal (16 credits) / External (8 credits)

Computing

DRAMA (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Open entry, although Y9 or 10 Drama an advantage.
Course Content:
This course builds on skills developed in the junior drama courses. It requires the use of perception, imagination, speculation and interpretation as students develop practical knowledge in drama, develop ideas in drama, communicate and interpret in drama, and understand drama in context.
Assessment: Achievement Standards - Internal (19 credits) / External (5 credits)

ENGLISH (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Level 5 in creative and transactional/expository writing in Y10 is advisable to succeed in this course.
Course Content:
This course prepares students for eight achievement standards. Three of these are internally assessed and cover writing, speaking and media production skills. Five achievement standards are externally assessed and cover writing, reading and understanding a variety of unseen visual and written texts, and the study of literature.

English

ENGLISH (NCEA LEVEL 1 - Two Year Course)
Course Content:
This course is designed to cover the eight achievement standards over two years. The intention is to slow down the pace of the syllabus and spend twice the time on half the number of standards per year. Those students who are capable of gaining NCEA credits but need more time to master the skills of reading for understanding and writing especially are advised to consider this option. Entrance to this class is based on the recommendation of the HOD.


ENGLISH (Alternative Programme)
Course Content:
This course is designed to cover the eight Achievement Standards over two years. The intention is to slow down the pace of the syllabus and spend twice the time on half the number of standards per year. Those students who are capable of gaining NCEA credits but need more time to master the skills of reading for understanding and writing especially are advised to consider this option. Entrance to this class is a privilege because only hardworking students will be offered a place, based on the recommendation of the HOD.


FRENCH (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Y10 French
Course Content:
An extension of vocabulary and grammar enables students to read widely and to communicate in a range of situations. Topics include holidays, shopping, giving directions, making reservations and leisure activities.
Assessment: Internal (9 credits) / External (15 credits)

GEOGRAPHY (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Level 5 in Y10 Social Studies
Course Content:
The internally assessed work will involve students carrying out research near the school; looking at issues in geography that involve New Zealanders deciding about the future of their native forests and beautiful scenery, and looking at our place in the world pattern of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
The work towards the examinations at the end of the year involves studying natural hazards like earthquakes and hurricanes, where New Zealanders live, where they are moving to, and some of the trends in population are also studied, alongside places in Asia, such as Japan, India, China, Singapore and many others. Coal mining in New Zealand and dairy farming are also investigated, with a visit to a dairy farm part of the year's programme. Students learn the skills of the subject, including map work, simple mathematics and problem solving, which are part of the examination. More emphasis will be placed on offering more internally assessed standards to replace those sat by examination.
NB: Students will participate in fieldwork outside the classroom.

Geography

GRAPHICS (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Y10 Graphics
Course Content:
Students develop skills gained in Year 10 and tackle further design problems based in the areas of graphics, technology, media and environment. Skills in freehand, formal and computer aided drawing techniques are included. Regular homework is necessary to achieve the required quantity and quality of work.
Assessment: Achievement Standards - Internal (12 credits) / External (12 credits)

HISTORY (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Level 5 in Y10 Social Studies
Course Content:
This course is an introduction to 20th Century world history. You will learn about some big ideas that have shaped the last 100 years, including international relations and social change. Films illustrating these themes are viewed. Internal assessments include research into a major event from this era and constructing a secret service file about it. Other achievement standards interpret cartoons and posters, others are short answers, and one essay.
Four topics are studied:
New Zealand's Search for Security - The Springbok tour, the anti-nuclear movement and the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, New Zealand's role in Vietnam and Korea. Causes of World War II - The treaties and events which helped cause WWII. Black Civil Rights in the USA - Martin Luther King, Malcolm X. Irish History - The creation of the Irish Free State; breaking away from British rule.
Assessment: Achievement Standards - Internal (8 credits) / External (16 credits)
Some Unit Standards are offered during the year as well.

History

HOME ECONOMICS (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: A pass in Y10 Food, Nutrition & Technology or at discretion of the HOD.
Course Content:
This course will contain the knowledge and skills required to plan, select and prepare food for the adolescent to meet the National Nutritional Guidelines. Food hygiene and safety, culture and foods, exploring technological developments, applying the decision making process for food choices, and impact on well-being/hauora are also studied. Each unit involves a number of theory assessments.

Home Economics

HOSPITALITY (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Open Entry
Course Content:
This course is made up of 15 credits with Level 1 Unit Standards. Students will study food hygiene and food safety, preparation and presentation of fruit and vegetables, and preparation and presentation of cakes.
Each unit consists of a number of written assessments and practical assessments. Students need to achieve both parts of the assessment to gain credits for the unit.

MAORI LANGUAGE (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Y10 Maori
Course Content:
To develop the basic language skills of reading and writing, listening and speaking to a level commensurate to Level 1 of the Te Reo Maori curriculum for second language learners. Students will express their language abilities through a range of modes, drawing on personal experiences.
Assessment: Graded tasks assessed holistically for all skills (combined) during the year. External assessment for reading and writing, internal assessment of listening and speaking for NCEA.

Maori Language

MATHEMATICS (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Level 5 in Y10 Mathematics
Course Content:
This course prepares students for nine achievement standards, three of which are internally assessed. Internal assessment covers measurement, statistics and part of geometry. External assessment covers number, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and probability. This course supports many other school subjects requiring an understanding of mathematics.

Mathematics

MATHEMATICS (APPLIED, NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Open Entry
Course Content:
This course has been designed by the Waikato Mathematics Association. Topics covered are whole numbers, decimals, oral maths, tables, geometry, measurement, business mathematics, graphs, number extension, algebra and formulae, coordinate geometry and graphs, geometry, and Pythagoras and trigonometry. Students will carry out practical tasks, written tests and investigations.
Assessment: Credits towards NCEA may be offered through Unit Standards and the Waikato Mathematics Certificate.


MUSIC (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Entry to this course will be at the discretion of the teacher. Students must play a musical instrument and should have had tuition in this instrument since the beginning of Year 9. (Note: Voice is an instrument)
Course Content:
This course is suited to students who have a keen interest in all aspects of music. There are six achievement standards. Students are required to perform as a featured soloist and as a member of a group in front of an audience, compose music for their own instrument and for a specific occasion, and study three music works which includes score analysis. There is an external exam in November which assesses listening and score reading skills.

Music

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: At the discretion of HOD
Course Content:
This course is both practical and academic. It explores basic anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and their application to sport, fitness and leisure. Students explore how the media portrays the body in a sporting context. Students participate in activities and relate this to their overall health and well-being/hauora. Students are expected to bring a high level of personal and social responsibility to this course.
Working well within team situations is a pre-requisite for success.
Physical performances are assessed against national criteria and students analyse and evaluate their performances. Students must be aware that the course involves commitment to the theory of physical education as well as the practical. Critical thinking, analysis and evaluation are important aspects of this course.
Assessment: Achievement/Unit Standards - Internal - written and practical (24 credits)

Physical Education

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH (YEAR 11)
Course Content:
This course has both practical and theory components.  Over the course of the year students will participate in different physical activities, participate in team sports, learn about sexuality and sexually transmitted infections, develop personal and interpersonal skills, and study the effects of smoking.  Students will also study how the body is portrayed in physical activity. 
Students opting for Level 1 NCEA PE cannot also take PE and Health unless this has been expressly approved by the HOD PE and the dean.

SCIENCE (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Achieving Level 5 consistently in Y10 or by negotiation with HOD.
Course Content:

Chemistry: Metals, Acids and Bases, Hydrocarbons and Fuels
Physics: Motion, Energy and Waves, Electricity

Science

SCIENCE (NZASE, NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Open Entry
Course Content:
A selection of practically oriented science-based activities designed to improve understanding and application of the scientific process. Topics are equally divided into those with a basis in biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy and geology.
Assessment: End of topic tests, practical skills, and report towards NZASE Certificate in Science at Bronze, Silver or Gold Level. Internal Unit Standard assessments towards NCEA.


TECHNOLOGY (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Open Entry
Course Content:
This course is designed for students to enhance their skills in working with resistant materials and to develop a practical understanding of the design process, from investigation and research through to the development of a final solution.
Assessment: Achievement Standards - Internal (16 credits) / External (12 credits)


TOURISM & INTERGRATED STUDIES (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Level 5 in Y10 Social Studies
This subject would suit students who find sitting examinations very difficult but who would still like to study some of the interesting subjects listed in this course.
Course Content:
A combination of units from tourism, geography, history and social studies, with an emphasis on internally assessed units rather than externally assessed ones.
Assessment: Unit Standards -Internal (24 credits) with optional opportunity to sit some extra external assessments.


WORKSHOP SKILLS (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Open Entry
Course Content:
This is a practical skills-based course. Students will work with a variety of materials to develop hand-tool and machine skills such as wood/metal turning, forging and metal casting.
Assessment: Unit Standards.
